The renovation of the historic Maggie Hathaway GC, as part of the FORE Youth: 2023 U.S. Open Community Legacy campaign, is officially underway following a groundbreaking ceremony held on property this morning.
This is a significant milestone in a long-term project that began with the 2023 U.S. Open at The Los Angeles CC (LACC) and will culminate with the reopening of an enhanced and rejuvenated golf facility, along with a new clubhouse and community room. The renewal of the course, while maintaining its character and feel, will enhance its long-standing role as a communal gathering spot.
"This project is more than a renovation; it's a commitment to nurturing the next generation of golfers and fostering a love for the game within the community,” said SCGA Junior Golf Foundation Executive Director, Kevin Gigax. “The FORE Youth campaign ensures that Maggie Hathaway Golf Course continues to be a welcoming space where young athletes can develop their skills, build confidence and connect with peers.”
The groundbreaking, attended by numerous local city and county officials and partners, including the United States Golf Association (USGA), PGA Tour Pro and Campaign Chair Collin Morikawa and world-renowned course architect Gil Hanse, celebrated the start of construction.
“This place is special and the people around here have known that for a long time,” noted USGA CEO, Mike Whan. “Partnership made this project happen and the fact we’re putting shovels in the ground today is awesome.”
Hanse is overseeing the revitalization of the golf course, which is slated to reopen in late 2025 with additional facility enhancements slated for late 2026.
“This place revitalizes your soul,” Hanse said. “I’m excited to return in a couple of months and be on a bulldozer. When it’s all done and we’re back here celebrating, you’ll find a very enjoyable golf course.”
More than 50 junior golfers attended the event from various local schools and partnership groups that regularly practice and play at Maggie Hathaway GC. Various members of the media, including community news outlets, local TV stations and golf news organizations attended and covered the milestone celebration.
"Our commitment to the youth in this community goes beyond just providing facilities; it's about creating opportunities,” said Fred Terrell, 2023 U.S. Open FORE Youth Campaign Co-Chair and Vice Chairman of Investment Banking at Wells Fargo. “With the renovation of Maggie Hathaway Golf Course, we're investing in a place where young people can find mentorship, build life skills and be inspired to pursue their passions, both on and beyond the course.”
